Microsoft quarterly profit jumps 51 percent

Its shares, down 14 percent so far this year, rose 1.6 percent in after-hours trading. The world's largest software company posted a fiscal first-quarter profit of $5.4 billion, or 62 cents per share, up from $3.6 billion, or 40 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter. That beat Wall Street's average forecast of 55 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters. Sales rose 25 percent to $16.2 billion, ahead of analysts' $15.8 billion average forecast. Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein said the company had not seen any adverse effect on sales of computers running Windows because of Apple's popular iPad tablet device.
